Marcal's condition may improve
At the invitation of the West Transdanubian Water Management Directorate, our Association's fish management group leader, József Mesterházy, also represented himself at the meeting with nature conservation experts from the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate, on the Vas County section of the Marcal River. The topic of the meeting was the coordination of the theoretical and practical design and implementation parameters of the water retention interventions planned by the water management manager.
The Marcalon experiences a water shortage and low water level every year, which also affects the Mersevát peat mine lake. In order to address the ecological problems that arise at this time and to ensure water use, the Water Management Directorate plans to implement interventions that can mitigate or prevent the damage caused by water shortages. The ecologically permeable bottom sills planned in three places in the Marcalon, to be developed in the small watercourse, would ensure the support of groundwater in the areas above the sections, thereby stabilizing the groundwater balance of the area in the vicinity of the watercourse, and could also support the prevention of the drying out of meadows and ex lege marshlands along the watercourse, in addition to ensuring the living conditions of the watercourse's wildlife and water withdrawal needs by storing water in the upper section of the riverbed.
The experts present agreed on the need to implement the plans presented by the Water Directorate and - since structures that are permeable to living creatures are expected to significantly improve the ecological status of the watercourse - to carry out interventions on further river sections.
The larger body of water created will also improve the living conditions of the river's catchable and protected fish population, and it can also stabilize the state of the neighboring still water, thereby helping our Association's fish management activities.
We are confident that we will be able to report on the results of these exemplary water management and nature conservation interventions in a short time.
