Pre-reared sculpins add color to the fish population of the Rába

In order to maintain the most diverse fish stock possible, our Association, in proportion to the available resources, strives to acquire diverse, so-called optional species, in addition to the carp, bream and predatory stocking included in the fish management plan and serving the needs of anglers. Based on our existing partnership with Baja's Megafish Kft (Dr. Dániel Kovács-Bokor), 3,000 pre-reared ling were placed on the section of the Rába between Ikervár and Nick, with the assistance of our professional fish warden Tamás Karácsonyi.

This special fish species is the only domestic representative of the cod family, which is unique in appearance and lifestyle. Despite its rarity, it occurs in most domestic medium or large rivers, but it is a rare fishing catch, primarily due to its winter activity, as it is active in cold water, in the autumn and winter months, and its reproduction also takes place in cold water, with 1mm, oil-containing eggs floating in the water. Despite its catfish-like body shape, it cannot be confused with any other fish species due to the single, developed whisker on its chin and its fins.

Since few people fish for it during the cold winter, the quantity caught is not significant, but according to the few fanatical linguine fishermen, catching and eating it is a real experience, especially the developed liver, typical of codfish, is mentioned as a special delicacy.

The minimum size that can be caught is 25 cm, and the maximum quantity that can be kept is 3 kg of ling.

Based on our annual agreement, the supplier is expected to deliver 10,000 one-year-old balins to the Rába River in the fall.

After that, colleagues will continue to be at the disposal of fellow anglers in 2025 according to the following customer service order:
