Gersekarát is a village with 770 inhabitants in the southern part of Vas County, on the so-called Vasi Hegyhát, 9 km from Vasvár and 18 km from Körmend. Its relative geographical location is fortunate, as it is close to the Austrian and Slovenian borders. The environmental conditions of the village are outstanding: the hilly landscape covered with forests and vineyards, the abundance of wildlife in the forests, the lake on the border of the settlement and the undisturbed tranquility of all this offer a pleasant environment not only for fishing lovers, but also for those who want to relax.
The lake was created in 1992 as a welfare reservoir, and the fishing rights were granted by the Gersekarát Municipality Government for a period of 15 years to the Vas County Association of Sport Fishing Associations at the end of 2008. The reservoir has an area of 36 hectares and is fed by the Sárvíz and Csengô streams, each through a pre-reservoir.
The lake is suitable for fishing as well as swimming, and its well-maintained shores offer opportunities for beaching and camping. A marked hiking trail also passes through the settlement.
Beach and camping information is available here >>>
Camping, guesthouses, general stores, restaurants, village guesthouses, and snack bars on the lakeside serve the needs and comfort of tourists visiting here.
All Vas County anglers are entitled to fish on the fishing waters if they have a general annual/Gersekárat annual or daily/weekly Vas regional permit in addition to their state fishing license.
The Association built a racetrack in 2009, consisting of 58 4*4 m starting points, in accordance with international competition rules, which is an ideal venue for the domestic and international competitions held on the lake several times a year.
Its average depth is 2-2.5 meters, the deepest point is 5-5.5 meters depending on natural precipitation. Within the fishing area, the fishing is less difficult up to about 60 meters from the shore, but the angler may encounter a stump. The shallower water part in the bend at the corner of the lake is fished mainly in spring, where the water warms up faster. In summer, more people fish for catfish in this part, which is attracted by the abundance of small fish. The fishing spots in this section can also be occupied during competitions.
On the prepared riverbed map, different colors were used to mark where the depths are and how the fault lines form, up to a distance of 90 meters from the shore, thus providing great assistance to anglers.
All domestic fish can be found in the lake. Mostly carp and crucian carp, and the larger specimens of grass carp swim in the water. Its whitefish stock is outstanding, which is clearly shown by the fact that in competitions an angler can usually catch 10-15 kilos in 4 hours. We can also catch carp and grass carp, and not a little. The predatory stock is abundant, catfish, pike, and perch can be caught. The lake is so saturated with other fish that it provides enough food for the predator, so it is a great challenge for anglers to lure them onto the hook. We can catch beautiful specimens of catfish if we manage to lure them out of their shelter. Catfish and pike fishing are typical in Gersekarát. There are also large ones, but they are more difficult to catch, because they will find any other fish before the one on the hook.
Only one side of the 36-hectare lake is open to fishing, the other side is a wooded area that cannot be entered, and fishing from a boat is not allowed. The fish have learned that if they want peace and quiet, they prefer to move to the other side. The chances of catching fish are particularly good after competitions, as the large amount of bait used lures bream and larger fish out of their hiding places. Large carp are protected on Lake Sárvíz with a size limit of 60 cm.
Fishing spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. On weekends, it is worth starting early because the shore is quite full, and it is also worth finding out when and what competitions are held, because then fishing is not possible in some parts. The shore is grassy and well-maintained. By car, next to the road above the lake, approx. 30m away, and in two designated parking lots.
The season usually lasts from the end of March to the end of November. Fishing is only allowed on the shore towards the Gersekarát settlement. On the left side of the lake, in front of the men's and women's toilets, you can pitch a tent for a night or two. In addition to fishing, the well-maintained shore of the lake offers the opportunity to go swimming and have a picnic, and even a play area and sandbox await the little ones.
