Sárvíz lake in Gersekarát

Gersekarát is a village of 770 inhabitants in the southern part of Vas County, on the so-called Vasi Hegyhát, 9 km from Vasvár and 18 km from Körmend. Its relative geographical location is fortunate, as it is close to the Austrian and Slovenian borders. The village's environmental features are outstanding: the hilly landscape covered with forests and vineyards, the abundance of wildlife in the forests, the lake on the border of the settlement and the undisturbed tranquility of all of this offer a pleasant environment not only for fishing lovers, but also for those who want to relax.

The lake was created in 1992 for the purpose of a well-being reservoir, and at the end of 2008, the Vas County Association of Sports Fishing Associations received the right to fish from the Municipality of Gersekarát for a period of 15 years. The area of the reservoir is 36 hectares, it is fed by the Sárvíz stream and the Csengô stream, each through a pre-reservoir.

In addition to fishing, the water of the lake is also suitable for bathing, and it is also possible to go to the beach and go camping on its well-kept shore. A marked hiking route also passes through the settlement.

Camping, guesthouses, general stores, catering establishments, village guesthouses, and buffets on the lakeside serve the food and comfort of visiting tourists.

Every angler in Vas county is entitled to fish on the fishing water, who, in addition to his state fishing license, has a general annual/gersekarat annual or daily/weekly Vas area permit.

In 2009, the Association built a competition track with 58 4x4 m starting places in accordance with international competition rules, which is the ideal location for the domestic and international competitions held on the lake several times a year.

Its average depth is 2-2.5 meters, its deepest point is 5-5.5 meters depending on the natural precipitation. Within the fishing area, approx. It is less bumpy up to 60 meters, but you may encounter a log every now and then. The shallower part of the water in the bend at the corner of the lake is mainly fished in spring, as the water warms up faster here. In summer, many people fish in this area, the catfish are attracted here by the multitude of small fish. The fishing spots in this section can also be occupied during competitions.

On the prepared bed map, up to a distance of 90 meters from the shore, where, what depths are, and how the fault lines are formed are marked with different colors, thus providing great help to fishermen.

All domestic fish can be found in the lake. Most of them are carp and spiny carp, and mainly the bigger specimens of grass carp swim in the water. Its stock of whitefish is outstanding, which is clearly shown by the fact that in the competitions, each angler can usually catch 10-15 kilos in 4 hours. You can also catch carp and grass carp, and not a few. There is plenty of prey, catfish, pike and perch can be caught. The lake is so saturated with other fish that it provides enough food for the predator, so luring them to the hook is a big challenge for the anglers. You can catch nice specimens of catfish if you manage to lure them out of their shelter. Catfish and pike catches are typical in Gersekarat. There are also large ones, but they are more difficult to catch, because they will first find any other fish than the one on the hook.

Only one side of the 36-hectare water can be fished, the other side is a wooded part, where you cannot enter, and you cannot fish from a boat either. The fish have learned that if they want peace, they prefer to move to the other side. The chance of catching is especially good after competitions, as the tempting feed used in large quantities lures bream and larger fish out of their hiding places. Large carp are protected in Sárvíz Lake with a size limit of 60 cm.

Fishing spots can be booked on a first-come, first-served basis. On weekends, it's a good idea to leave early, because the coast is quite crowded, and it's also worth finding out when and what kind of competitions there are, because then you can't fish in some parts. The beach is grassed and maintained. By car along the road above the lake approx. 30m away, as well as in two designated parking lots.

The season usually lasts from the end of March to the end of November. Fishing is only allowed on the coast above the Gersekarát settlement. On the left side of the lake, in front of the men's and women's toilets, you can pitch a tent for a night or two. In addition to fishing, the well-kept shores of the lake offer the possibility of beachcombing and picnicking, and there is even a playground and sandbox for the little ones.
