Small-Rába
ShareThe dam of the village Nick enables the river Rába to feed Small-Rába during the whole year. The
Small-Rába is a natural side river of Rába, they separate 200 metres before the artificial dam of Nick. The water level of Small-Rába can be regulated by the lock system in the branch. From the beginning, as far as flood protection goes, the branch is one of the most dangerous sections of Rába, that is why a bank was built 421 years ago, which is still needed today.
The fast-flowing side river once drove mills. The section up to Miklós Major is regulated throughout, with a dam system installed on both sides. From the throat to the Miklós Major, it is white water, that means that the flow is faster and the oxygen content is higher than in the river Rába. The width of the water varies between 10-15 metres. The depth of the water depends on the water let through the lock, average 1,5-2 metres. Most of the river bed is gravely.
From the aspect of the fish fauna, the same fish live in the Small-Rába as in the Rába, as there are no slow-flowing sections, it is 1,5-2,3m/sec everywhere, therefore, only those fish live here, who like the permanent flow. The side streams (e.g. Geráb, Kőris stream, Répce channel) of Small-Rába brings limnofil fish species with them. The most characteristic fish in Small-Rába are mullet, asp, nase, catfish, pike and breams. The 3,5km long section of Small-Rába in Vas county is easily fishable.
