Pre-reared smolts arrived in Kerka and Rába

In order to maintain a diverse fish population, our Association, depending on the resources available for fish stocking, strives to purchase other, so-called optional fish species in addition to the carp, bream and predatory stocking included in the fish management plan and serving the needs of anglers. Within the framework of this, 2,000 pre-reared smolts were placed from the Ócsárd site of H&H Carpio Halászati Kft. on the section of the Kerka River between Kerkaszentkirály and Dobri, and 5,000 on the section of the Rába River below Körmend.

Repeating the previously published brief description: "this special fish species is the only domestic representative of the cod family, which is unique in its appearance and lifestyle. Despite its rarity, it occurs in most domestic medium or large rivers, but it is a rare fishing catch, primarily due to its winter activity, as it is active in cold water, in the autumn and winter months, and its reproduction also takes place in cold water, with 1mm, oil-containing eggs floating in the water. Despite its catfish-like body shape, it cannot be confused with any other fish species due to the single, developed whisker on its chin and its fins."

Since few people fish for it during the cold winter, the quantity caught in our county is still not significant, but according to the few fanatical sculpin anglers, catching and eating it is a real experience. The larger specimens can be caught on the Rába River primarily in the dammed sections and in larger bodies of water, but the river section with its winding but slowing bends can also be an excellent habitat for the pre-reared stock.

The minimum size that can be caught is 25 cm, and the maximum quantity that can be kept is 3 kg of ling.
