Nutria presence in Vas county
The nutria is an invasive species native to South America, the reduction and extermination of which is a priority task throughout the country. The experience so far is that where nutria live, fishermen and fish keepers know about their presence, since, unlike beavers, this species often moves during the day. Last year, Dávid Czabán completed a nutria survey and trapping in upper Rába, which he plans to continue this year as well. In the county of Vas, its occurrence is quite sporadic so far, but I would like to control its spread as long as the number of individuals is low.
In the upstream part of the Magyarlak dam, there is a fairly large herd of nutria, the decline of which already started last year. Unfortunately, there is already information about the area around Szombathely, as well as near Marcal. In the county of Győr-Moson-Sopron, nutria are already present in all watercourses, so it is expected that individuals will appear more and more often from the north. The most characteristic distinguishing feature of nutria is that the fur around the nose and the whiskers are all white (beavers are black). And their tails are cylindrical, rat-like. It is the size of a nutria, although it can be measured for a larger rabbit, about 6-7 kg. You can see them in the attached photos, which were taken in the upper Rába area.
We hereby ask fellow anglers that anyone who has seen a nutria while fishing should contact biologist Dávid Czabán and
help your work by indicating the exact location!
