Everyone wants to catch big
Based on photos, a stolen carp was identified by Gyula Filakovszky, a sport angler and social (volunteer) fish guard. In recent years, on a certain section of the Rába, his friends have caught and released him several times, and the fish have appeared in one of the lakes of Vas County for two weeks.
No two fish are alike, based on the unique scaling, fins, head, tail, carp can be well distinguished, especially large ones, of which there are not many in Hungarian waters. There are those who hunt for these, not for the fish that have been planted, but for those that have been raised by nature, many anglers have survived, only a few of whom live long and grow large. Such is Gyula Filakovszky, who has been fishing in the Rába for many years.
Everyone wants to catch big fish. Today, the technique is so advanced that a water can be robbed in a short time. There are those who abuse this, carry the fish for their meat, and there are those who have enough fishing themselves to be able to relax, recharge. The carp in question has been caught, photographed and released by four of my friends in recent years. One does not forget such a large fish, it was a little over 30 kilograms then.

Gyula Filakovszky saw on Facebook that someone had exposed a photo of the carp in question, caught on one of Vas County lakes. He knew right away that he could only get into the lake if he was transferred. He immediately went there to congratulate and asked how it felt to post with a stolen fish. Of course, they didn’t know the fish wasn’t there. He wanted to call the pond owner on the phone but couldn’t reach it, so he started a LIVE on Facebook, walking along the lake, telling his opinion about the story. Many reacted to him, disapproving of the case.
“If fish are taken away from state waters, we’ll be looking at empty waters soon. Big fish are stolen by greedy people and sold to private lakes, who buy them for hard money and fish for them for an expensive, tens of thousands of daily allowance. We can fish in the state waters managed by the Vas County Association of Sport Angling Associations for only an average of HUF 40,000 per year. The goal would be to keep pond farmers from buying illegally. They expect quick benefits and success from these big fish. As a general rule, the lower size limit: only fish over 30 centimeters can be taken away. The upper size limit in Vas County is from 1 January 2020: carp over 60 centimeters cannot be taken away. This is how those who need fish meat and those who need fishing experience can live side by side. If everyone followed the rules, the richness of our waters would remain.
We asked the National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH) about the case, but as the case is “still open”, little information was shared about it. One of their staff members informed that the state fish service had noticed a video on the community site that a canal fish had been caught in an iron pond. They approached the owner, who undertook to listen to the fish, and since he was cooperative, the lake was not closed, it was possible to fish on it further. The carp in question can be caught by anyone, and the owner is obliged to notify NÉBIH and the people of the office will return it to its original habitat, the Rába.
We called the owner of the lake by phone to ask if the carp in question had been added but did not want to comment on the matter. Norbert Puskás learned from the executive chairman of the Vas County Association of Sport Fishing Anglers: Unfortunately, the case is not unique in Hungary, including Vas County.
- Unfortunately, there are individuals called anglers who catch large fish, especially carp, caught in natural waters for community use by conscious fishing and transfer them to private, primarily for-profit waters in violation of the law. In many cases, the owners of the private lake are willing to pay hundreds of thousands of forints for the extra-sized fish sold in this way to the perpetrator of the crime, the president said. - In connection with the case, it cannot be stressed enough that the role of local fishermen, who are afraid of nature and fish, is extremely important in fish protection. It is not possible or necessary to set up a fish guard next to every angler. The current example also shows well that, thanks to the attention of Gyula Filakovszky, a wonderful carp may soon return to its original habitat in the Rába River, which has several huge specimens in several sections.
On the nearly 1,400 hectares of community-owned iron water managed by the association, the local fishing ordinance also prescribes the following for all peccaries: “Every fisherman has the right to warn violators of , police, etc.). “Hearing is not only found in the case of large fish, in recent days we have also seen a similar situation in the case of smaller carp in Lake Abért and Lake Csepreg Brick Factory, in which the procedures are currently underway. If you notice a hearing, report it immediately to the covenant, let no one leave the fish stock in our waters unspoken.
