Awareness program and fish stocking on World Water Day
On March 18, the West Transdanubian Water Management Directorate and the Vas County Association of Sport Fishing Associations organized a joint program on the occasion of World Water Day. In accordance with tradition, the event was hosted by the Arany Stream and the Csónakázó Lake in Szombathely, where organized school groups and interested individuals could participate in the programs.
The aim of the unusual nature education event was to draw attention to the special importance of water and the importance of protecting natural waters and their wildlife. The visiting students were able to learn about domestic fish species, the wildlife of the Vásárlón waters, and the basics of fishing in a playful and interactive way.
One of the most spectacular elements of the program was the fish stocking, during which a significant amount of fish was released at several locations:
– 500 kg of carp into the Újperint Gravel Mine Lake No. 1
– 500 kg of carp to the Szombathely Boating Lake
– 300 kg of carp to the Szombathely Fishing Lake
– 200 kg of carp to the Gencsapáti Fishing Lake
At the Boating Lake and the Szombathely Fishing Lake, visitors, including children, were able to actively participate in the fish release, which was a special experience for them. The program was not only spectacular, but also attitude-forming, as the young people were able to experience firsthand the importance of responsible water use and fish management.
World Water Day has been celebrated every year on March 22nd worldwide since 1993 to draw attention to the importance of preserving clean water. This year's event in Szombathely was an excellent example of how environmental education can be presented to the younger generation in an experiential and practical way.
