The investment to help maintain the Marcal water supply has begun
At the beginning of the summer, we already reported that the Vas County Association of Sport Fishing Associations, the West Transdanubian Water Management Directorate, and nature conservation experts held joint discussions on the increasingly serious water shortage situation in the Marcal region and the possibilities for preserving water resources.
To our great joy, the consultations were followed by concrete measures. The staff of the Western Transdanubian Water Management Directorate prepared the necessary plans during the summer, carried out the licensing procedures, and on September 8, construction works began on the section of the Marcal located in the Szergény and Mersevát areas.
In the first phase, natural-looking stone sills are being built at two locations, with the aim of temporarily retaining water in the Marcal riverbed. The interventions can help not only the river itself and its wildlife. Supporting the water level can also have a positive impact on the groundwater balance of the surrounding areas, which is especially important for us due to the proximity of Lake Merseváti.
Unfortunately, this summer has shown more than ever how vulnerable our region's water resources are. After the drying up of Lake Merseváti, it is perhaps not necessary to emphasize the importance of any intervention that serves to retain water and support groundwater.
We thank the Western Transdanubian Water Directorate for listening to the signals coming from the region, including our Association as a partner in the negotiations, and for allowing construction to begin so quickly after planning and permitting.

We are confident that the technical interventions currently being implemented will significantly contribute to the preservation of the Marcal water resources in the long term, to the stabilization of the groundwater level in the surrounding areas, and through this will also have a positive impact on the water balance of Lake Merseváti.
The experiences of the past period have made it clear that conserving water is no longer an option, but a common interest and a common task.
