Successful National Coastal Spinning Championship on Gyöngyös
Between April 10 and 11, 2026, the Gyöngyös stream in Vas County hosted the 10th National Coastal Spinning Championship organized by the Hungarian National Fishing Association. The anniversary event was of special significance, as the prestigious competition was held again in Hungary after three years. Our Association tried to provide full organizational support for the successful organization of the competition, ensuring the appropriate course and conditions, and actively participating in the fish stocking.
Before the championship, brown trout were stocked in the Gyöngyös stream in several stages. At the end of March, 50 kg were stocked, then another 80 kg on April 9, and another 70 kg after the first day of the competition. In total, about 750 brown trout strengthened the stock, ensuring balanced fishing opportunities for the competitors.
36 competitors took part in the two-day, single-round championship. The first day of competition was characterized by particularly difficult conditions. The suddenly cooling weather, wind and occasional snowfall presented the competitors with a serious challenge. Although there were bites, catching the fish proved to be a much more difficult task, so each catch was of paramount importance.
Zoltán Szilágyi won the first day, ahead of János Fórizs and Gábor Antal.
However, on the second day of the competition, the conditions changed radically. Due to the more favorable weather and the new installation, the trout became more active, which was reflected in the results. While the competitors caught a total of 67 fish on Friday, this number increased to 194 on Saturday.
The course still wasn't easy. The fallen trees, overhanging vegetation and difficult-to-fish sections required serious technical knowledge. In many cases, the key to success lay in extremely precise casts.
The second day was won by József Tamás Kovács, followed by Zoltán Fórizs and Tamás Horváth.
The overall competition was extremely close, especially between the Fórizs brothers. In the end, with equal points, stage wins were the deciding factor, so the 2026 national championship title went to János Fórizs, who thus became national champion for the second time in his career.
The end result:
- 1st place: János Fórizs
- 2nd place: Zoltán Fórizs
- 3rd place: Gabor Antal
A total of 261 fish were weighed during the competition, and almost the entire field finished successfully.
The championship was not only about the competitors' performance, but also about working together. The competitors themselves participated in the placement of the fish, and the organizers fine-tuned the placements based on the experiences of the first day for an even more successful second round.
The 10th National Coastal Spinning Championship opened the 2026 spinning season in a fitting manner. The varied conditions, technical course and close competition provided an exciting weekend for both participants and visitors.
