Fish Day is held every year on March 20, during which fishing organizations held events related to fish, fish protection, or anglers in several parts of the country. It was no different at the Vas County Association of Sport Fishing Associations, where last week the fishermen celebrated by planting native fish species on the Rába River. At the end of the month, on Tuesday, March 28, the Association's program for the protection of fish continued in Vaskeresztes with the Fishing Professional Day and further training.

Fishing Industry Day was held on Tuesday in Vaskeresztes

Miklós Seregi, the president of the Vas County Association of Sport Fishing Associations, welcomed those present and expressed his joy that, in addition to the leaders of the authorities involved in fish protection, there were also a large number of volunteer fish guards and officials involved in the protection of fish in the fast-paced world. In his speech, it was said that the biggest challenge as a non-governmental organization is the provision of community tasks based on volunteering in all areas, including fish conservation. One of the most important tasks of the Association is the protection of fish and fishing waters. The waters of Hungary and our county and the indigenous fish that live in them, as well as the varied wildlife around the waters, are our common treasure. The management of our waters and the fish farming carried out on them are a long-term responsibility, in which our Association is fortunately supported by the relevant authorities, nature conservation and water management organizations and law enforcement agencies in addition to its volunteer helpers, and he expressed his gratitude to the official leaders present.

He pointed out that nowadays the price of available fish has skyrocketed, the price of one kg of carp has reached HUF 1,600-1,700, and the price of other fish species has also risen significantly. In addition to carp, hard-to-obtain native fish species (e.g. bream, carnivores, etc.) also require special attention and protection, because drought and lack of water threaten their stocks more and more. Due to food inflation, the retention of caught fish will also increase, so maintaining and developing fish conservation is more and more important now. In addition to expanding knowledge, the aim of the day was also to nurture human and professional partnership relations - President Miklós Seregi concluded his greeting.

At the beginning of the professional program, subject to prior registration , executive chairman Norbert Puskás greeted the participants, followed by "Fishing Rod in Iron Waters". during his presentation , he briefly, but comprehensively, presented the Association's current and future activities, operations, application opportunities, and development results.

After a presentation on the operation and activities of the host organization, fish management group leader József Mesterházy - thanking and evaluating the work of the professional and social fish keepers - gave information about the expectations adapted to the changing conditions and problems, primarily for the social fish keepers. Both speakers emphasized that the Association, as a non-profit NGO, continues to count on the work of volunteers who are concerned about fish, water and nature and want to help. The undisclosed aim of the association was to, in addition to expanding the professional knowledge of professional and social fish wardens, on Tuesday, in the framework of a joint professional program, sit the leaders of member associations, their fish wardens and the members of the participating authorities, state and law enforcement agencies committed to fishing and fish protection at a table, promoting the protection of our waters and increased protection of their valuable fish stock.

After that , Norbert Soós, specialist administrator of the Agricultural Department of the Vas County Government Office, as a fish management authority, held a short briefing on the legal background of the further training and examination of fish guards, the relationship between official work and fish guards.
The professional day was continued by Róbert Hercsel, head of the Szombathely section engineering of the West-Transdanubian Water Directorate , during which he touched on the experiences of working fish ladders, the water features of the previous drought year, and described the habitat rehabilitation opportunities that can be implemented along the Rába River and their anomalies. In addition to water management, most of the questions from the participants were related to the operation of power plants, dams and fish ladders located on river waters, and the negative impact of fluctuating water levels on fish stocks. The water and nature protection experts participating in the event agreed that, in cooperation with the professional fishermen of the Association, they will jointly document the illegal operation of the fish ladders and weirs in the county, or those that differ from the operating license, to the Water Authority. With joint action, the Association and those present would like to ensure that the fish stocks in natural fishing waters receive the maximum protection and attention that is provided by legal options, and that in periods of water scarcity, fish and aquatic organisms enjoy an advantage over other uses.

After a short break, the law enforcement agencies took over the role, firstly Zoltán Szalay r. Lt. Col. from the Public Order and Border Police Department of the Vas County Police Headquarters [🚔] entitled "Police experiences, advice on the proper provision of fish protection" , and then Gábor Perecz from the Körmendi Police Technical School. lieutenant colonel, Tamás Tóth r. lieutenant colonel, Norbert Horváth r. Major gave a short theoretical overview on the topic of "Self-defense and the use of coercive devices by persons performing police duties, as well as waterside measures tactics in practice, professional fact-finding, current legislation" .

Finally , zoologist Gábor Fera, an employee of the Őrségi National Park Administration, gave an interesting presentation on two topics, entitled "The presence of alien invasive species in our natural waters" and "The significance of the life activity of the Eurasian beaver for the domestic fish fauna".
During the presentation, several "problematic" species were presented, from nutria that spread along wetlands to non-native decapod crabs to turtle species released into the wild from irresponsible animal husbandry. In addition to the already well-known non-native fish species, the participants were also able to learn about the spreading amurgae and its negative effect on the indigenous, highly protected bog spider. After that, the audience heard a short presentation about the nature conservation, water management and fisheries role and assessment of the Hungarian beaver population. The damage caused by the cormorant was also on the table, and instead of local reductions, the majority of those present urged an international solution, because it is clear that this problem cannot be solved with local reductions, and as a result of the ever-shrinking aquatic habitat, the native fish stock can no longer withstand such a large army of cormorants. load as well.

At the end of the day, President Miklós Seregi and Executive President Norbert Puskás asked those present to help the Federation and its member associations in their own areas, so that the protection of fish and fish habitats receives the respect that allows our children and grandchildren to enjoy these wonderful waters can spend their free time on the coast in a natural environment. After the official program of the Fisheries Professional Day and Continuing Education, the participants continued their informal discussion over dinner and related to the issues discussed and the problems of the sector.
