Fish rescue after the flood
The large-scale flooding of the Rába and Pinka rivers in June caused a lot of damage and excitement to the residents of the waterside settlements, and also affected the river fish stock. It is a natural consequence of a sudden tidal wave that our river fish leave the river bed depending on their species, age group, water temperature and bed conditions, for nutrition, reproduction or just for the benefits of calmer water movement.
Our professional fish wardens and our enthusiastic fishermen who travel the wild waters monitor the floodplains at this time, in order to rescue fish, mainly juveniles, trapped in the suddenly receding water, in the smaller pits, in previously dry branches, but also in tractor tracks.
During the June flood, you can constantly hear news about flooded Austrian fish ponds, fish farms, and the appearance of unexpected and unusual fish species. In addition, in the areas previously affected by "usual" fish rescue, we did not experience a large amount of fish stranded outside, but the problem appeared in new locations.
In several locations, almost a month after the tidal wave receded, it became clear that the fish trapped outside could be approached and especially physically rescued, which was mainly brought to the attention of our conscientious fishermen. In addition to the signal, several of them also actively participated in saving the fish stock, for which we would like to thank them!
According to the current legislation, it is the duty of the person entitled to fish management to save the native fish species in the event that the value of the saved fish stock exceeds the costs of the rescue, regardless of this, several of our enthusiastic fishermen helped our fish wardens with their own equipment and in their spare time.
Of course, we are aware that we cannot and cannot bring all the fish back to the main riverbed, but with the help of our fishermen, a large number of native fish were still returned to the Rába and Csörnöc-Herpenyő.
Once again, we thank all our fellow fishermen for their help in saving fish!
