Asbestos-contaminated parking lots at Lake Abért

The West Transdanubian Water Management Directorate informed the public and fellow anglers yesterday that the asbestos problem detected in Vas County, which has now become of national importance, unfortunately also affects the areas near Lake Abért. Due to the risk of asbestos contamination, NYUDUVIZIG, as an asset manager, had accredited sampling carried out in the parking lots and roads on the shores of Lake Abért, which confirmed the presence of asbestos in the large parking lot, the fishing parking lot of Lake Abért, and the road connecting them.

The parking lots on site have been temporarily closed by NYUDUVIZIG. The restriction was made in consultation with the Vas County Government Office in the interests of the safety of the population.

Following the situation, we immediately began discussions to ensure that fishing could continue to be guaranteed under the circumstances. Today, in cooperation with the West Transdanubian Water Management Directorate, we examined the options for ensuring parking for anglers even in the current extraordinary situation.

Next to the previously established fishing parking lots, there are green areas and concrete road sections where you can park without obstructing traffic, despite the closures. The usable areas are marked in the image below.

We would like to emphasize that:

• Fishing is still not prohibited in the entire fishing area of Lake Abért.
• however, entry into closed parking lots and service roads is prohibited,
• and on the service roads connecting the parking lots, you may only use your own vehicle on foot or by bicycle.

In the coming weeks, we will work together with the Water Directorate and the competent authorities to examine various options and reopen the fishing parking lots as soon as possible.

Until then, we ask everyone to:

• park only in designated areas,
• Only anglers with a valid fishing license may use the parking space,
• Everyone should behave responsibly on the waterfront and take care of green areas.

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that moving, damaging or causing any damage to the concrete elements placed as traffic barriers by NYUDUVIZIG will result in the immediate withdrawal of your regional fishing license! We cannot afford to lose this temporarily secured parking opportunity in this extraordinary situation because of one or two rule-breaking anglers.

The temporary inconvenience was not caused by our Association or the Water Directorate, but by the mines that brought asbestos-contaminated material into official commercial circulation, which is why we ask for the patience and cooperation of our fellow anglers. Let us responsibly use the opportunity that is currently provided to those with fishing licenses, so that it can be maintained in the long term, and we can also hold all of our planned fishing competitions!

Consultations are ongoing with the Vas County Government Office regarding the necessary further measures, and we will provide information about the changes.
