Environmental action and canoe inspection along the Rába River
Our association's fish guards, following the stocking of perch and 110 tons of carp in the previous weeks, will be performing other tasks in addition to continuously guarding the fish stock. Due to the milder than usual March weather following winter maintenance, the shores of the fishing waters also provide plenty of tasks, not only controlling the large number of anglers appearing on the shores of the waters.
In addition to the established fish stock, the protection of the native fish stock of the Rába River is also of paramount importance, so on Saturday, March 14, the fish guard team carried out a canoe inspection of the section of the Rába River below Körmend, where they approached and mapped the difficult-to-reach coastal fishing spots and sections from the water.
In addition to the continuous supervision of the established fishing waters and the maintenance of the waterfront, our fish guards and their volunteer helpers also contribute to the cleaning up of the traces left behind by visitors and anglers who do not respect nature. Based on the good relationship established with the employees of Szombathelyi Vízerőmű Kft., our professional fish guards and volunteer anglers also helped to clean the bank of the Ikervár power plant canal from the waste left behind (unfortunately, a significant part of it was caused by anglers).
During the environmental campaign on Monday morning, the shore of the popular fishing lake was tidied up by removing 10 large plastic bags of waste. In addition, an information board containing the fishing regulations, which had been stolen by an enthusiastic “critic”, was also replaced. However, it is important to emphasize that even if such a board is removed, the rules will of course still be in effect. However, the replacement of the board is again financed by the fishing community’s revenues, so resources must be allocated for this, which could otherwise be used for fish stocking or development. Similarly, leaving garbage behind is unacceptable: despite our efforts to strengthen the social acceptance of fishing, if a few people from our community of more than 12,000 behave in this way, the entire fishing community is put in an unworthy position.
We would like to draw the attention of those concerned that fishing in a trash-filled fishing spot may be sanctioned, according to our approved fishing regulations, even by the withdrawal of a territorial ticket.
We would like to thank the Weking Sports and Cultural Association and the Körmend police sergeant Tamás Sánta for their cooperation in controlling canoes on the Rába River, as well as the employees of Szombathely Water Power Plant Ltd. and all the volunteers for their help in cleaning the artificial canal bank in Ikervár.
