Cormorant decline report

In response to the previous call of our association, quite a few of our fellow fishermen indicated the migration of the cormorant population from the frozen fishing ponds to several sections of the Rába River last week.

Since, based on the provisions of the official license, our professional fish wardens can only carry out their cormorant hunting activities with the knowledge and cooperation of the local hunting authority, so the organized and successful hunting required some preparation. On Tuesday, our fish wardens carried out thinnings on the dammed section of the Rába River in Ikervár, during which, supplemented by local hunters, they brought 9 large cormorants to the table.

Although this does not seem like a large number, in the case of extremely alert cormorants, based on the experience of previous years, it is considered a good result. Cormorants, which appear in large numbers after the lakes freeze, eat or seriously damage not only fishable but also protected and highly protected specimens of the productive winter fish stock.
