600 kg of carp and 15,000 river fish arrive in the waters of Vásár
On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, on the occasion of World Water Day, colleagues from the Vas County Association of Sport Fishing Associations will give lectures on the basics of fishing and the fish fauna to 100-120 children on the shore of the Szombathely Boating Lake as part of a program organized by the West Transdanubian Water Management Directorate. Between the changes of school student groups, a visual installation will also take place, in which the Balaton carp will arrive: 400 kg of fish will be placed in the Szombathely Boating Lake, while another 200 kg of fish will be placed in the neighboring Horgász Lake.
At the suggestion of the Hungarian Fisheries Society, the Department of Fisheries Management of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Hungarian National Anglers' Association, the Hungarian Aquaculture and Fisheries Interprofessional Organization, and the Hungarian Association of Aquarists previously made a joint decision that March 20th of each year will be Fish Day starting in 2017. The leaders of the Vas County Association of Sport Fishing Associations and the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Association of Sport Fishing Associations decided in 2023 that on the occasion of Fish Day, the two associations would jointly stock native river fish with children on adjacent sections of the Rába River. This is the third year of this joint stocking.
The Rába is the third longest river in Hungary and the most significant domestic tributary of the Danube. The 795.7 hectare section of the Rába River from the border to the Nicki Dam is sub-leased by the Vas County Association of Sport Fishing Associations through the MOHOSZ, while the 450.4 hectare section below the Nicki Dam is sub-leased by the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Association of Sport Fishing Associations. The Nicki Power Plant has divided the Rába River, which is popular with anglers, into two sections for fishing, but thanks to the agreement between the MOHOSZ and the two regional associations, for almost ten years now all anglers with the territorial license of their own county can fish without any problems on the approximately 5-kilometer section below and above the dam.
A good example of cooperation between the associations is the joint fishing, which can now be considered a tradition, during which we place many thousands of rare, native fish species in the Vas and Győr sections of the Rába River. Both associations also stock other waters in addition to the Rába, so in Vas County a total of:
– 5000 mullet (between 8-13 cm; Rába River 2500, Pinka Stream 1500, Répce River 1000)
– 5000 chub (between 10-15 cm; Rába River 2500, Pinka Stream 1500, Répce River 1000),
– 5000 pieces of sedge (between 10-15 cm; Rába River 2500 pieces, Pinka Stream 1500 pieces, Répce River 1000 pieces),
In Győr-Moson-Sorpron county, total:
– 9000 mullet (between 8-13 cm),
– 5000 chub mackerel (between 10-15 cm),
– 5,000 baby chicks (between 10-15 cm) will find a new home.
The fish come from the special legal entity of the MOHOSZ, Megafish Kft. in Baja. The planned joint completion of the fishing will take place on the Nick section of the Rába River, expected on March 21, 2025 (Friday) at 2:30 p.m., to which we warmly welcome all interested parties.
